MHYC Racing 22nd and 29th
MHYC will be running racing each afternoon on the 22nd and 29th. The aim is to get 5 races in for each class with windward/leeward returns with a gate as the courses. We do still need some parent volunteers to help out. You don't need to know anything about sailing. We just need able bodies.
East Coast Championships - Bitter Sweet For MHYC
The East Coast Championships provided a great lesson for all young sailors! With MHYC Juniors Sailors all having mixed results, However in the end it all came back to experience.
With Majority of the MHYC Optimist fleet in the Intermediate Fleet it started off as a stop start day. With only one race in the morning before being sent back a shore as the wind kicked in to a gusty South Westerly.
It was frustrating for Intermediates to be held ashore on Day 2 whilst everyone was heading out, but the decision proved spot on.
This left only a few MHYC Open Fleet Optimists and the 420s to fly around the water of Rose bay. In what was a supreme display of boat handling ans skill. Flynn Twomey lead the way for the Optimists after shaking off 9th he finished of the day with 4 top 5 finishes including 2 bullets to sit inside the top 5. Following his lead was Tom Green, Cian Campbell and John Mark Paul. All of who showed glimpses of the future that looks bright.
The 420s were flying around the course at full speed taking every ones attention at some point. It was a day that the boys finally took some revenge after been shown up by the girls in the past few regattas, Finn Gilbert/ Louie Collins and Alec Brodie/ Xavier Winston Smith showed the fleet how to handle the conditions to take an early lead into Day 1 of the regatta.
Day 2 started with a breeze and ended with more. The intermediates were held ashore before finally being abandoned at lunch due to the excessive wind. However the Open Fleet and the 420s went out to finish off the regatta. Things didn't look great with Flynn OCS in the first race however he rallied to finish the day with 2 bullets to take out the championship. Tom Green had a great last day to climb the ladder and finish 4th.
Cian and John Mark Battled all day but only being relatively small couldn't keep up the fight all day to finish 17th and 23rd respectively. The Intermediates were treated with being able to watch all the racing and learn from their older peers before having a look at Sydney to Hobart Maxi Loyal.
Day 2 of the 420s left the boys to battle it out for the win with Finn/Louie taking the win over Alec/Xavier with Gosford sailors Sophie Mcintosh and Emily Summeril finishing third. A special mention to Ashleigh Coles and Lorane Gaborit who fought all day through to the end in conditions that were far from suited to them.
Another Special mention must go to the Intermediate Sailors Perl Twomey, Zac Smith and James Alexander who fought all day in their first ever regattas. All of them showed extreme courage and skill to sail in those conditions with Perl winning the encouragement award from the Race Officer.
Well done to all the sailors as we look forward to seeing them all back at MHYC on sunday.
