MHYC Sound Regatta Report
MHYC had its Sound Regatta on the weekend but the 2013 curse of light winds struck again for the 6th regatta since the Optimist Nationals, dictated by light winds. As sailors rigged up it was looking disastrous, but as RO Phil Yeomans and his team left the dock, a light winter sea breeze kicked in and we were able to send the sailors out.
The course was set with a start line just off Grotto Point and it looked like the wind was settling in as the first races got under way, after a short postponement. The 420s were fighting for every position as the lead changed numerous times each race. It was a battle of consistency the whole day as both James/Connor and Finn/Louis found out that huge leads could evaporate with in seconds as the wind shifted, died and pulsed through the course area. In the end it was the girls Dana and Cathy that finished on top with a score line that would make any sailor jealous. They were followed closely by James and Connor in second and Dante and Alex in third.
The Optimists got 3 races in and again had a hard fought series that ended up with light wind specialist Archie Cropley tacking the honors. However he didn't have it all his own way, Jamie Rosenberg led every race at one stage but this was undone by the tricky wind conditions with numerous attacks from the rest of the fleet. Jamie ended up second with Jack Hanigan having his best regatta to date to finish in third.
The Cadets ended up with only two entires with a lot of them away at the snow but the competition was still tightly fought with James and Kai Lin finishing in front of Charlie and Zac.
Thanks Again to all our parents and Volunteers who helped out on the day. To Phil Yeomans and his team, thanks again for another great regatta!
