Squads Report
Last Sunday saw a picturesque day at the Club with a light to medium North Westerly breeze to greet our sailors. With 19 Optimists, 4 Cadets and 7 420's, it was a great day out on the water. The racing was extremely tricky as it always is with westerlies. Finn and Louie started with a bang with a huge win in the first race. However it was James and Connor that came back hard and pulled off a great come back from behind win in the second race. It was tight racing all the way around the course with the lead changing all the time. Dana and Cathy pushed hard for all three races and were unfortunate to not claim a bullet. Jamie Swavely and her new crew showed some form to be up the front end for parts which was good to see. The fleet also welcomed a new crew in Mackenzie Gray and Ed Smyth teaming up in a new boat.
The Cadets are coming along nicely under the guidance of their coach, Henry Bagnell. While only a small fleet racing, it was very close and tight with a blanket being able to cover the fleet most of the time around the course. Over the day, the cadets had 3 different winners for 3 different races proving how close the fleet racing was.
In the Optimists, it was great to have most of our sailors back from overseas which added to the hotly contested racing. It was extremely close racing with 3 different winners over the 3 races. Max Paul, Flynn Twomey and Guy Rosenberg jumped out early in the first race to be leading the pack before Flynn finally took the honors over Guy with some great downwind speed and tactics up the final beat.
The second race saw Chelsea Connor show that in her final couple of races in an optimist she can still cause havoc by leading for most of the race. However it was Otto Henry, fresh from the Europeans, that took the win with an amazing last downwind leg where he put on 150m on the rest of the fleet in one leg.
Chelsea had to settle for second followed by John Cooley.
The third race saw the young guns take control with Tom Green sailing a consistent race to take the win over more experienced sailors. Closely followed by Cian Campbell who has just moved up into the open fleet and Jack Hanigan who is always improving.
Thanks again to Bruce for running the racing with the team of parents. We are looking forward to next Sunday for another day of racing.
