Tig Thomas Trophy
MHYC is looking at awarding a new trophy in memory of Gilbert (Tig) Thomas. Tig was not only just a great champion of our club, but also a champion sailing. He competed in World (1973 Half Ton Cup in Denmark), Country and State Championships as well as many other major regattas and offshore race.
Tig in Plum Crazy won the inaugural 1972 South Solitary Island race and again in 1974. This was a race from Sydney to South Solitary Island, back to Pittwater (500nm). He also won his division in the 1971 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and set a record in 1975 Sydney-Hobart race for boats under 9.5m (31ft) that took many years to build.
So, in recognition of Tig’s feats we are rededicating his Half Ton Cup Trophy to recognise MHYC members (non-social) who competed in interclub events and major championships. Points will be awarded for both participation and placings. MHYC Pointscore races will not be counted as we already have recognise these trophy winners.
If in the last year (from 1st April 2017 to 31st March 2018) you have competed in a State, National or World Championships and/or major regattas (eg Sydney Harbour, Hamilton Island, Raja Muda, Cowes Week) or major ocean races (eg Southport, Hobart, Fastnet, Osaka), then please send your resume to sailingadmin@mhyc.com.au.
By Friday 13th October, we need to know your name, Boat, Class, Event, placing and Month. You did not have to have been the skipper.

MHYC Sailors perform at Sail Port Stephens Regatta
The Sail Port Stephens’ Regatta has just finished and MHYC was well represented. It was a wonderful, fun regatta (both sailing and social) and we enjoyed good weather except for the last day.
The Pantaenius Commodores Cup was held on the first 3 days of the regatta in near perfect sailing conditions.
The beautiful Margaret Rintoul V, skippered by Graham Morton was 2nd in the Commodores Cup Division 1. The last day was exciting as they went into the last race in 4th place. After 2 days of light weather, strong winds at the end of the last race picked up the grand girl and she bolted to the finish line. It was nice to see one of our faithful MHYC sponsors on board, Ivan Rowe (Yacht Sales Australia), who was our spinnaker trimmer.
Margaret Rantoul just managed to beat another MHYC boat Lumiere (Warwick Miller) who was just one point behind.
Macscap (Peter McClelland) did well in Division 3, taking out 2nd place.
The Pantaenius Port Stephens Trophy (incorporating the NSW IRC Championships)
The wind was much stronger for the Port Stephens Trophy races held from the 13th to the 15th April. On the night of the 14th a dramatic storm blew in and sailing had to be cancelled the next day. A 30-knot nor'westerly swept the race course.
Congratulations should go to the Bob Cox and the crew on Nine Dragons who beat their nearest rival by 5 points in the NSW IRC Championships, Division 2. Kahaleesi was 4th overall.
Also sailing in the regatta were:
-
IRC Div 1 – Philolsophers (Peter Sorensen), Toy Box 2 (Ian Box), Wailea (Neil Padden)
-
Performance Cruising Div 1 – 4th Kaimai (Rob Aldis), Mortgagechoice Rumba (Kerry Burke and Rob Carr), Llama II (Jon Linton)
