MHYC E News 26th October, 2016
Welcome to Middle Harbour Yacht Club's E-Newsletter
We had some exciting racing last Saturday with the Open, Inshore & Club short series all racing as well as the first regatta for the 2016/17 Farr 40 Australian Open Series - there was a definite buzz around the Club! With the windy conditions on Sunday, racing was abandoned for the Farr 40's second day. We look forward to welcoming back the Farr 40's to the Club for their next regatta on the weekend of the Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship , 26th & 27th November, 2016. Proud Parents After Ben Finishes his First Race
Ben Crafoord completed his first Opti race on Sunday and it was windy, 8 boats started 4 finished and Ben came 4th. The race was abandoned half way through but his coach told him to keep going in a 25 knot nor easter and he got through the finish line with capsized 420's and Cadets strewn down the race track. Not bad seeing he didn't have a swim. Brought a tear to the eye. So now he is into it and doing the season.
Well done Ben!

Mainsail Trimming - brought to you by Tony Bull, Australian Sailing Magazine
Everyone knows the helmsman is the driver of a yacht; he or she is the person who actually points the boat in the (hopefully) right direction and turns the corners when tacking, gybing or mark rounding. But imagine how hard it would be to drive a car with little or limited control over the accelerator. This is the vitally important role of the mainsheet trimmer on a keelboat; he is as important to the steerer as his right leg would be if he were driving a car.

RIP - Luke Meads
It was with a heavy heart that we said farewell to Luke Meads on Tuesday 18th October at a celebration of his life after a valiantly fought battle against Pancreatic cancer. Many MHYC members will know Luke as he was a regular crew member on Mortgage Choice Rumba and several other boats around the harbour including Antipodes and Margaret Rintoul V. Luke lived in and around Watsons Bay for most of his life and learned to sail at Vaucluse Sailing Club. He was an excellent bowman although was just as well known for his achievements on the dance floor as on the foredeck. He regularly participated in Hamilton Island race week, Port Stephens regatta, Southport & Coffs Harbour races and even completed a Sydney – Hobart (in pain) after breaking his ankle on the first day. There was no kinder, more patient man out on the water during racing and no one more enthusiastic for participating in post sailing social activities. He was a loving and supportive partner to Katrina Prince, a role model for 4 children and a great friend and mentor to fellow sailors. As an all-round great bloke, he will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure to know and sail with him.
- MHYC Member, Nicola Morgan
