The first of the winter series kicked off at MHYC today with a modest fleet of seven boats enjoying some lively racing on The Sound.
Two races were completed in the Winter Sprints Series with south-westerly breezes mostly 20 knots easing through race 2. Race Officer Steve Tucker and his team set a windward-leeward course just short of a mile between Spring Cove and Middle Head.
Sirius (Garth Riley) chose the right side after the start and kept clear air to claim the PHS win in Race 1 from No Friends (Geoff Charters) and Stormaway (Jack Stening). Riley managed a port tack start and avoided the congestion at the pin end when the flag came down for Race 2. Sirius was first to finish but second on PHS, with the win taken by Contentious (Brian Lees) and the J24 Innamincka (John Crawford) third. Sirius leads the series after two races.
Next Saturday the Winter Pursuit Series gets started, with provision for Saturday Social Sailors to sail a short course. The next sprint races are on May 25.
