SSORC Countdown - Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 November

The 40th edition of Middle Harbour Yacht Club’s (MHYC) Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship (SSORC) will be conducted on the weekend of 25-26 November. The acceptance of online ‘Standard Entries’ ($220.00) has now been extended up until 2359hrs on Friday 17 November.  The acceptance of online ‘Late Entries’ ($275.00) has now been extended up until 2359hrs on Tuesday 21 November.

The current list of entries in the Premier Class include Paul Clitheroe’s TP 52 ‘Balance’ and the two DK46’s Andrew Dally’s ‘Khaleesi’ and Bob Cox’s ‘Nine Dragons’ along with Steven Proud’s Kernan 44 ‘Swish’, winner of this year’s Hamilton Island IRC passage race.

For the first time, the Sydney 38 East Coast Championship and Farr 40 One Design Series will be combined into the SSORC, sailing windward-leeward offshore courses on Saturday and the hybrid offshore course on Sunday.

The entries for the Sydney 38 fleet include ‘Conspiracy’ and ‘Risk’ and the Farr 40 fleet has regular competitors Martin Hill with ‘Hill PDA Racing’, Robert Pitts with ‘Double Black’, Alan and Tom Quick with ‘Outlaw’ and Class President Gordon Ketelbey with ‘Zen’.

The close racing of the Super 12 fleet on Saturday in the Seven Islands Race is expected to be a feature of the weekend with MC38’s including Easy Tiger VI and Lightspeed racing against the Shaw 11m Little Nico and Farr 400 Vento.  These yachts will all participate in windward-leeward racing on Sunday to round out their weekend.

The SSORC is a highlight of the Sydney racing calendar with two days of competitive racing followed by live music, great food and a catch up with p with fellow competitors on the beach back at the Club.

Racing commences on Saturday, when competitors will sail a Passage Race, which includes MHYC and the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Ocean Pointscore. Running in tandem with Saturday’s racing is the challenging Seven Islands Race, for those who prefer to sail an inshore fun race that starts and finishes off MHYC.  Following a pursuit style start, the race takes in some of the Harbour’s iconic islands.

Make sure you get your entries in before the deadline via www.ssorc.mhyc.com.au.

Middle Harbour Yacht Club would like to thank Helly Hansen and Sydney City Marine for their support of the Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship.

Cruising Division Talk - Monday 20 November

Kingsley Griffin - Senior PhD Researcher, Applied Marine & Estuarine Ecology Lab, UNSW.

Kingsley wears a few different hats - he’s a keen sailor and underwater videographer, but his day job is as a marine scientist. Kingsley has spent the last few years investigating the threats and management of Sydney harbour’s reefs and seagrass meadows - he’s interested in finding pragmatic ways to reduce our impact and allow for restoration of these important habitats. But outside of his PhD research, Kingsley recently returned from Greenland, where he sailed a section of the West coast north of the arctic circle, to film underwater where few have dived before.

Since most of us haven’t sailed or dived in Greenland, this is a great opportunity to hear more about a fascinating and far-flung part of the world - and maybe hear a thing or two about our own backyard, too.

BYO BBQ from 6.30pm and talk commences 8.00pm.

Whisky Tasting with Glenmorangie - Wednesday 22 November

A special Club Members' Event - Come and enjoy an hour with Glenmorangie Whisky  - includes a cocktail on arrival and six tastings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

SWISH aiming for another win in Coffs Race 2017

Steve Proud is rightly "proud" to be the owner and skipper of SWISH, a Kernan 44.  Off the back of his great win in this years Hamilton Island IRC Passage Division 1, Steve is looking forward to doing it all again in the Coffs race on the 27th December 2017.

The Royal Motor Yacht Club (RMYC) in partnership with Coffs Harbour Yacht Club will host the race that will start in Pittwater and finish at Coffs Harbour.

The Coffs Harbour Yacht Club is very excited this year will mark the 37th running of the Coffs Harbour race. Steve who sails out of Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) has competed in the Coffs race many times. He launched his latest boat in 2012 and competed in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Coffs race.  He says SWISH is a highly technical boat and much more difficult to sail than its predecessor, a Sydney 38.   The crew needs to be experienced as there is always a lot going on.

“It is fairly brutal to handle with the crew putting as much sail on the rig as it can handle.  So the crew have to be on their game at all times and respond quickly to the conditions" said Steve.

Steve agrees that the Coffs Coast is a great destination for sailors and their families and friends.  He says that Coffs Harbour is surrounded by the natural beauty of the coastline and hinterland and recommends a visit to the great surf beaches on the northern side of the harbour before the return trip home.
